Andrew Goodwin

Andrew Goodwin’s theory suggests that there are 5 main aspects of a music video.
  1. Tend to include genre characteristics.
  2. Frequent references to the female body. (Sexualisation)
  3. Relationships between the music and visuals.
  4. Star image. Artists have to be the centre of attention. Lots of close ups.
  5. Intertexual references.

1) Chris Brown and Tyga Ayo: this video represents the genre  R&B with all the expensive cars and houses. The music video highlights the amount of money they have to spend. There are many women in their bikinis which highlights what R&B music videos usually represent.
2) Nicki Minaj Superbass: this video not only sexualises the women in the video but it sexualises the artist as well. In most of the scenes in this video the women are hardly clothed. It also paints a picture what women are expected to look like.
3) Taylor Swift Mine: This music video highlights the relationship between the music and the visuals. e.g. she sings "you were in college working part time waiting tables" and then in the video we see him waiting tables. This music video is an example of a video which is there to be a visual representation of the lyrics.
4) Justin Bieber Beauty and the Beat: This music video is starring the artist in most of the shots. There are many close ups as it looks like he is carrying the camera. He is the centre of attention in the music video and it does not really represent what the song is about.

5) Destiny's Child Independent woman: this music video references the movie Charlie's Angels. There are many references that the audience will see as an "inside joke"
