Digital Mock-Up of Ancillary task 2 (56)

I have also started creating my artist's website shown in the screen shot above.

Digital Mock-Up of Ancillary Task 1 (55)

I have started by creating my front cover of the digipak in photoshop where I have considered all my design ideas such as the colours and font. I am very happy with the outcome and I am hoping to keep this cover as I begin to create the back cover and inside panels.

Where my ideas have originated from (51)

To get a better understanding of where my initial design ideas for my ancillary have come from, I have annotated existing ancillary products, that come under the pop genre, and given details of some of the designs on them.

Short List of Fonts, Colours, Layout & Designs- (For Digipak) - (50)

Dos and Don'ts (52)

Dos:

·         Font:  When it comes to font it is best two have a maximum of two different fonts. More than two will make the digipak look messy and unprofessional. The font should be carried out through everything including the CDs.

·         Colours: The colours used are very important. It is important to stick with no more than three colours. This will give your ancillary product a theme.  The three colours should compliment each other and not clash.

·         Rule of thirds should be used in your pictures. This will help create symmetry.

·         Include the following to make it look professional: barcode, date, copyright, artist website, the artist’s name, the record label.

Don’ts:

·        Overuse of effects: When using photo shop on your images, an overuse of effects is not good, it will take attention away from what’s important.

·         Cover the artist's face:Keep the writing away from the artists face otherwise the audience will not be able to see who it is; it will not brand the artist well.

·         Place your photos where it fits; don’t go overboard just to fill in blanks.

·         Stretching your photos will lose marks and ruin the picture.

54) Costumes

For the digipak, Amber will be wearing a blue top and her black beanie hat which is her form of synergy. She will specifically wear blue for two reasons. One being that she wore a blue dress in the music video and another being the blue matching the colour scheme of my digipak cover.

This is the outfit she wore in the music video and will probably wear for the digipak photos too.

Analysing website

53) Shortlist of potential photos to use

I have chosen these photos as they are all either close up or medium close up shots. This means that her entire face will fill the picture while showing her outfit (dress and hat) as well. Showing her outfit is important as I want to use it to match the colour scheme of white, blue and pink.

I plan of taking more photos with a plain white backdrop and proper lighting in the studio.

Ancillary analysis 2

52) Do's and Don'ts of Design work

51) Inspiration from other products

Website:

I like how Adeles bio page is very personal which engages the audience. I really like the way she started it of 'When I was 7, I wanted to be 8. When I was 8, I wanted to be 12. When I turned 12 I just wanted to be 18. Then after that I stopped wanting to be older.' and the line of 'Wishing I hadn’t ruined so many good things because I was scared or bored.' because it fits well with the narrative of our music video.

I also like Katy Perrys many aspects of Katy Perry's website of the the homepage having a hashtag, play and buy button for her newest song and social media links. I also like the way she connects with her audience via the language she uses on her news page. Lastly I like the visuals of the page where her tweets are shown all around her picture.

49) Analysing a Rock ancillary - The Kooks

The Kooks Digipak uses the central image of a medium shot of the band sitting down and playing their instruments which is also their element of synergy - the band playing. Their colour scheme is black and white with a splash of red here and there as shown via the CD, album name and design across the leaflet. Black and white fits the Rock genre very well as it is quite a dark and dull style of music. The font is very big and bold on the actual CD to the point that you cannot see all the letters but on the album cover it is quite small and placed right at the top with a gap between it and the central image. This draws m
ore attention to the album name because of the colours and the simple design is not too distracting so therefore the album name is emphasised. The ratio of text to image is not that much of a difference but compared to other genres digipaks, The Kooks have slightly more text which relate to information of what inspired them to produce this album, credits, institutional information and so on. They have more text as they are the ones who write their own music.

48) Analysis of a pop ancillary - Katy Perry

Katy Perry's album and digipak follow the theme of candy and confectionary. The colour scheme is based around blue, white and pinks while she is seen nude on the main cover. This colourful scheme matches with the vibrant and fun Pop genre. The main cover consists of her lying in clouds which looks like candy floss. The fonts are carefully used to mimic certain sweets such as candy cane and strawberry jelly. This is again reflected through the CD design of a donut and peppermint sweets. This is the element of synergy used in Katy Perry's Digpak. There is much more image compared to text - text only present at the back of the album of the track list and some institutional information in the small print.

Production Diary (Day 9) FINAL DAY!

DATE: 03.12.2015

Today was our final day to edit our music video. We are very happy with what our final edited video looks like. As we also have flashback scenes in our video, we were debating over wherever to have forms of transitions over them to make it clearer to our audience that they are indeed past scenes. Therefore, we had gone through some transitions, however we did not like many of them. So we had finally decided on brightening the shots slightly to make these flashback scenes more effective.

For the final touch & our own satisfaction, we had ticked off our final edited video on the checklist!

Production Diary (Day 8)

DATE: 01.12.2015

Today, was a very productive day as it was our last opportunity to give our edited music video a sense of structure. We had of course followed our updated production schedule which, we had planned to quickly film some establishing shots around the area. This was because we had not filmed as many establishing shots on our first filming day and the shots we had filmed in Canary Wharf would not fit in the well at the beginning of our video. Once we had finished, we edited it into our video and fixed a few shots.

Quick To Do List!

Quick Little Feedback! (For Rough Cut 3)

We had the advantage of receiving extra feedback for our rough cut 3 from another student (Dan). Dan boosted our confidence as he had mentioned many good qualities about our video. Dan thought the use of our artist jumping during the beginning of the chorus is much better as it showed more of an impact and linked to the power of the song.

Production Diary (Day 7)

Date: 26.11.2015

Todays lesson was repetitive to our previous lessons. We carried on working very hard in editing our Music Video. We mostly tried to enhance the brightness of some shots that was advised to us in our feedback. We also corrected the editing throughout the video by trying to constantly cut to the beat. This was quite difficult as already had our shots organised in a certain way, however we eventually got there & made it work!

We also got some quick feedback from our classmate, Dan, who gave us positive feedback. This had boosted our confidence a lot as we initially thought our video was faulty after attempting to correct our mistakes. You can view Dan's feedback by going on to the blog titled "Quick Little Feedback! (For Rough Cut 3)"

Today's lesson was also productive once again and we also made quick plans on what we want to achieve in the next lesson.

Production Diary (Day 6)

Date: 24.11.2015

In today's second half of the lesson we had shown our entire class our rough cut music video in which we were given feedback consisting of positive elements and room for improvement. Throughout the rest of the lesson we had carried on with editing after taking in our feedback.

Rough Cut (2) Class Feedback

After showing our second rough cut to the class, we received feedback on our video. Here are some points on what was mentioned:

Positive Aspects:

  • The main concept of the video is very good as well as the structure of the video
  • The use of editing in general is good, mainly the use of a split screen
  • How the artist is presented throughout the video, good use of editing when showing the artist in a narrative aspect following her singing in a basetrack
  • The change of locations
Improvements:
  • Correct the lip-syncing as it's slightly slow
  • Show more of an impact at the beginning of the chorus
  • Some shots are long and so should be cut to the beat
  • A few shots are shown to be darker than others due to the time in which we filmed. We can overcome this by reshooting or possibly increasing contrast and brightness
  • Show movement of artist in frame, add shots in which the artist is shown not to always be in the centre of frame
After looking back on the points where there is room for development, we will definitely keep developing our video and add in most of the feedback given, as we know our audience's feedback is crucial, when creating a better video.

ROUGH- ROUGH CUT -1

The video above is our first attempt in editing our music video. We have created a rough cut music video to visually show an idea of how we want our video to be like. Although we have not edited the entire song, we have still added a variety of base tracks and shots to show elements of our video. Looking at our unique edited video, we are pleased with the outcome and our small feedback, hoping that our finished edited video produces the same results.

Production Diary (Day 4)

Date: 12.11.2015

Today we were finishing our editing for our rough cut. We were very pleased in getting good feedback on the structure of our music video. We had made slight changes from our previous editing however this was good as it gave us an opportunity to further adapt our video.

Production Diary (Day 3)

Date:10.11.2015

Today we had started the editing of our production. Firstly we had started by going through all our recorded footage and decided together on the shots we wanted to keep and use in our music video.

We had done this by agreeing on the footage that we thought would be useful and then imported all our marked shots onto the Premier Pro software to start editing. We were given feedback and started to create a "Rough rough cut" to give an initial idea on how we visually picture our music video.

Production Diary (Day 2)

Date: 08.11.2015- CANARY WHARF

Today was our second day of filming in which we shot scenes in Canary Wharf. We were content with our scenes yesterday filming with other characters, therefore we had only filmed base tracks of Amber. We did some filming outdoors and inside a bright greenhouse. We ensured that Amber had a change of clothes, as it was a little cold she also had a jumper to wear as soon as we had stopped filming to feel comfortable. Overall we were very happy with today as we had filmed a variety of shots that we knew would be very useful in our music video.

Production Diary (Day 1)

Date: 07.11.2015

Today we had started our production process by beginning to film for our music video. There were slight changes made throughout the day such as changes in the individuals acting out a certain role. Luckily we had prepared arrangements of having back up actors before and so easily used them when filming. There were also slight changes in our locations that we wanted to initially use, however our final locations that we had decided on did a great job in portraying a certain narrative to the video.

During the early afternoon, we had filmed our base tracks for our artist (Amber) in a girly bedroom. We had given our artist a variety of props such as a teddy bear, previous pictures that could be seen on a phone and many clothes that she could change into for different locations.

Amber  (Bedroom scenes)
After we had filmed the bedroom scenes, we had then done some outdoor filming in which most shots consisted of the "new girlfriend" with the "boyfriend". Alongside this, we had also filmed another base track outdoors of Amber + scenes in which she is showing to stalk her ex-boyfriend.

Next we had filmed the "front door scenes" in which Amber interrupts her ex-boyfriend and his current girlfriend's date. We had decided to use a fig rig in most of our shots as it mostly resembles the elements of music videos in general . Finally we had decided to film our artist's flashback scenes in which we filmed a variety of romantic moments her and her boyfriend had. This would fit perfectly in lour music video when Amber is reminiscing about her boyfriend towards the end of the video.

Overall, we are extremely happy with our first day of filming as we had worked productively. We managed to film many scenes and different base tracks in one day. This has motivated us when filming again and looking forward to our finished video.

Here are a few behind the scenes clips of our filming: ENJOY
