9) Analysing costume, props & setting

Analysis on Mise-en-Scene (9)

Video 1:  Pop Genre -Rita Ora R.I.P
Video 2: RnB Genre- Adele Rolling In The Deep
Grime- Skepta, Shutdown

Use of Costume

Throughout this video the music artist, Rita Ora, had a total amount of 7 costume changes which is very usual within the hip hop/pop genre. Rita also is presented to be shown in outfits that are quite creative and funky, mostly shown in a seductive way. Rita uses her costumes to present an idea of the lyrics “R.I.P to the girl you used to see” as she takes of her jacket while walking revealing more of her body.

Throughout the entire music video, Adele is shown to be in one costume only which is a black dress. This may be because Adele doesn’t promote herself as an artist with her body, costumes or accessories but merely just with her voice.

Throughout Skepta’s video there are 2 costume changes where he is dressed fully in white during the base track where it is daylight. The second costume change occurs when it is finaly dark and skepta is dressed fully in black.
Use of Setting & Location
Rita Ora’s video consists of many base tracks in a few locations, however it seems as if all the base tracks used are set in the same location but are just in different places. It is evident that the video is set in a basement lookalike room which can be considered to spport the pop genre as the setting for pop genre music videos varies.

Adele’s ‘Rolling In The Deep’ is set in an empty, undecorated room also giving a slight correlation to Adele’s costume of her plain black dress as it may be considered to be lacking variation.
The setting & location of Skepta’s video is set in an open out door area in London near an Estate. It’s often usual for most videos of the grime genre to be set near an estate or an open area around London symbolising that of artists living background.
Use Of Props

There are a variety of props used in this video such as cars in a basement which in a couple of shots, Rita is performing in but she also uses these cars as an element of her performance when she performs around the cars aswell. Rita uses these cars to her advantage.
There a a few props in the video such as wooden chairs in the room Adele is sat performing in and the use of glasses full of water
There are not many props used in this video except the use of a Range Rover car during the start of the video.

vv
From analysing the table, it can be said that the genre that consists of the most costume changes is pop from Rita Ora's Video than Adele or Skepta. This is due to the elements of the pop genre, having a higher budget and performing more for publicity by their bodies in which they choose the right outfit.

The setting & location is mostly different between pop & RnB with Grime. This is due to the local areas & locations used in Grime as opposed to pop where several locations are used in the video

Finally it can be concluded that props are more evident in hip hop/pop videos than the other genres as artists are giving more of a performance when they are lip syncing.

YouGov Profiler Research (7)

To get an understanding of different audiences for different music artists, I researched types or artists on YouGov Profiler and found out, in detail, some information about fans of artists. I researched on artists such as Beyonce, Skepta & The Weeknd.

8) Favorite previous student music video

This is my favourite music video as it went with disjuncture for its theme. It gets the audience thinking and feel a particular way. The filming locations, use of props, filters, body language, lip syncing, shot types and movement, and having the sunset all intertwine and create a very professional music video. This definitely deserves the full marks which it received.

6) Laura Mulvey's Theory

‘In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is stylized accordingly’ - Laura Mulvey, 1992

Music videos are often shot from the male perspective showing that men hold the power in society. Women are often sexually objectified.

This music video is a good example as certain parts (boobs and bum) of the woman's figure is often shot as the main object in the shot and her face is rarely shown. Also, the male gaze is present through out the entire video.

Summer Work (2)

During the summer I had created a story board of the artist Beyonce's video 'Yonce' in which I had drawn out each shot of the first minute of the music video explaining the type of shot it was, what was happening in each shot and explaining the mise-en-scene.

Introduction (1)

Hi, My name is Rizwana Patel. For this year I will be studying into Music Videos.

Over the summer, I had re-created a website for the American female music artist, Beyonce. In order to do this, I used a website builder called "Weebly" to help me & I also used Beyonce's original website to assist me in creating the structure and layout of my own.

Down below are some pictures of my website for you to see OR scroll down further to click on the link to my website to view fully!

5) Carol Vernallis' Theory

She observed editing and camerawork closely in music videos. She observed that edits in music videos come much more frequently than in a film, that many stand out as a disjuncture and that the editing seems to have a rhythmic basis closely connected to the song.

She came to a summary of these points:

  • editing stands out as disjuncture and the usual rules of continuity editing are broken in order to bring attention to what is on the screen
  • edits may be really obvious to draw attention to themselves, such as wipes and special effects

Example- This video by Mark Ronson is a clear example of obvious edits as it includes many special effects such as sparks shooting out and edits like split screens and wipes
  • Jump cuts are often used
  • Base tracks are frequently used to give the video structure

Example- This video by Tinie Tempah has over 18 base tracks

  • The camera may move in time with the music
