Question 1

 Ancillary

The outside and inside of my album cover follows the typical conventions of a pop ancillary. I tried to use similar colours to other artists such as Carly Rae Jepsen. The colours create an upbeat and good atmosphere like the music. There are two fonts used throughout the ancillary. They are girly and fun which follows the conventions. I have added everything that an album needs like the record company and barcode an the track list.

                                                                        Website
I was influenced by similar artists like Katy Perry who have similar types of music to our artist. The set up is different however we used light colours as well.

The website follows similar conventions to the album. The colour links them together as well as the similar pictures.
The website contains:
  • The bio- which is simple information
  • The photos of her life, making it a bit more personal
  • Video- which is a behind the scenes
  • Tour information so her fans have a direct link to the tickets
  • Contact info
  • Links to social media.

Goodbye Blogger...

The production of creating a music video, making my ancillary designs, researching & planning has come to an end. It has been stressful yet enjoyable and I'm really happy that I had the opportunity to produce my work within my group of lovely people. I have enjoyed this experience a lot.

Goodbye.

3) How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stage?

RESEARCH

1) How to use blogger

2) Animatic- During our planning stage we made a story board that we converted into an animatic. It shows each stage of the music video so that it was easier when we were filming the real thing to refer back to our animatic. It followed the narrative as well as the type of camera shots we planned to use and also changed shots according to the beat.

2) How efffective is the combination of your main product (video) and ancillary texts (website and digipak)?

When converting my word document to this application, it kept moving everything around so I had to get rid of titles. Theres also a chunk where it is difficult to read, this is it :  In my opinion, synergy is not very effective for connecting my media pieces as the branding decisions are not very strong and extravagant enough for the viewer to see a continuing theme. I wouldn’t say that it is not effective what so ever as the main images and shots are of Amber in the same hat and outfit and camera shot are consistent on all promotion pieces as our method of synergy. But this is the only method of synergy which links the video to the ancillary texts. The blue, pink and white colour scheme and style of font was not properly shown in the video while it is the main feature of the digipak and website. Other artists, as stated earlier, have approximately a minimum of 3 ways (location, colour, prop etc) in which synergy is used so I think that our initial branding decisions of combining the products is lacking.

Evaluation Plan

Before I begin to answer the questions to my evaluation, I thought it would be best to not be very quick with it but instead be more organised. Above are images of my evaluation plan on how I intend to approach each question. Hopefully I don't make huge changes and I stick to my plan. This will also help me when answering as I may forget a few things I want to mention, and so, I will always be able to refer back to my plan.

3) How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Planning stage

1) Blogger, Youtube and Internet in general

2) Animatic to create a digital story board. After drawing our story board, we used a camera to take pictures of the individual shots and matched it with the beat and lyrics to create a rough idea of how our real music video will look like

Production stage

1) Photoshop to edit my digipak

2) Premiere Pro to edit the music video

To lip sync and edit our video, we learnt how to use premiere pro. Through this we learnt how to add markers, use the razor tool to cut all the shots at once at points that go with the beat, speed up or slow down shots, add filters and do edits such as the split screen. Without this video we wouldn't have been able to edit as well.

3) Wix to create the website

To create Amber's website, i used wix as it was easy and had many features to add. For example, after choosing my template out of the many ones available, I easily uploaded a range of images, texts (of different colours and fonts) and videos from youtube and vimeo. Wix also had a whole range of widgets and icons ranging from list of tour dates, live social media feeds and many buttons which were customisable.

4) Cameras and memory cards

We used the Canon cameras which filmed in high quality which had a 128gig memory card which we had to keep organised in order to know where is where. We also used a canon DSLR to take pictures for the ancillary work in front of the white screen. Learning how to focus the camera, use different angles and shot types and controlling the studio's lighting all contributed to the end result.

5) Social media like Instagram to keep Amber's fans up to date (or our teachers really) with our filming progress. We also tagged our locations to tell them where we are incase anything happens.

4) What have you learned from your audience feedback

58) Response to feedback + ancillary in production

  1. The first picture does not go well with the hashtag of #AMBERUKTOUR as the beanie which has writing on it clashes with it.
  2. Make sure the fonts for both the album cover and  website are the same
Response to 1) I have now changed the image to one where the text on the beanie is not visible.
Response to 2) Unfortunately the website creator of wix does not allow installing fonts from third party websites so to match the fonts on my website to album cover, I chose a font which is similar to it instead. The font i chose is appropriate as our ideal style of font is in the handwritten style with the letter 'E' as a '3'.
Before:

 After:

    3.   Change the locations of her tour as they are too much of a big venue for a new artist

Response to 3) Before they were big mainstream venues like London O2 and Wembley and so on. Now they are smaller concert venues like The Limelight and The Ritz

   4.   The texts of tweets on top of the picture on the connect page are unclear

Response to 4) Before, the background picture filled the entire page where the text (of her tweets) were on top of the image so it was difficult to read. Now, i have cropped the image and placed the tweets on top of a pink background instead.

58) Feedback for Website

Feedback from Louisa:

What needs improvement:

  • The first picture does not go well with the hashtag of #AMBERUKTOUR as the beanie which has writing on it clashes with it.

  • Get rid of the brackets in the bio message
  • Change the locations of her tour as they are too much of big venues for a new artist
  • The texts of tweets on top of the picture on the connect page are unclear and hard to read
  • Make sure the fonts for both the album cover and  website are the same
What was done well:
  • All the typical conventions of a pop artists websites are present
  • All links are appropriate and work
  • The colour scheme matches the artist
  • Language is also fitting to artist/genre

58) Response to feedback

The response I got from my first drafts of my ancillary were
  • Correct some of mistakes in the bio of the website
  • Pick another font because Wix doesn't  not allow fonts from other websites.
  • Choose a different picture for my outside image of my album because she is not looking into the camera so its not gripping enough for an album cover.
  • Change the tour locations because she is too under developed to play there.

I made those changes and this is what it the final product looked like.

Costumes (54)

Blue Dress
When creating my ancillary for the artist's digipak, I will use a few images showing the artist in different outfits. The blue dress is a possible costume that the artist will be shown to be wearing as it will create a strong link to the music video because she is also shown to wearing the same dress. In order to give the artist more of an identity, we had taken photoshoot pictures where the artist was stood behind a white screen in a change of outfits. I may also use images where the artist is wearing a white crop top and grey skirt on my digipak too. This will also share a link to the music video as this outfit is very girly and gives me a chance to promote the artist's identity more of having a very feminine appearance.

UPDATE:

Our artist will not be wearing the "COCO MADE ME DO IT" beanie hat for the pictures that we have recently taken of her behind the white screen. She will be wearing a plain black beanie hat which is very similar to the style of the first one. It will still show synergy as the hat is of the same colour and design.

55) Plan for Digipak

56) Plan for Website

Photos Planned to Use (53)

These pictures were taken during the time of filming the music video. As a group, we have not decided on using these exact pictures, however they are potential images we can use and edit with when creating our digipaks. Some of these pictures are close ups and some are taken as a long shot, which can bring me to an advantage if I decide on using more than one image. These pictures are also great as the artist is supporting the mise-en-scene in the initial video by her dressing. Our artist (Amber) is wearing the same outfit worn in the video, which will create a strong link between the album cover & music video & all pictures will show a strong sense of synergy as our artist is wearing the "COCO MADE ME DO IT" beanie hat, which is her signature look.
